A 3D board that runs in the browser

The pieces are real three-dimensional models, lit in real time with physical materials β€” metal reflects, glass transmits light, wood keeps its grain. None of it is a pre-rendered image: the scene is drawn frame by frame by your device's graphics chip, through the WebGL that every current browser already ships.

There is no plugin to install, no account to create and no download to wait for. Opening the page is starting the game.

The camera is free: drag to orbit the board, scroll or pinch to move closer. You can read the position from a player's height, from directly above like a diagram, or down at board level to check a diagonal.

Start in 3D, switch to 2D, keep the position

3D is good to play in and awkward to calculate in. So the same game exists in both views at once: switch whenever you want and the board comes back on exactly the position you left, with the same clock, the same move history and the same legal moves highlighted.

Switching costs neither a move nor thinking time. Opening in 3D, dropping to 2D through a tactical complication and going back afterwards is the normal way to use it β€” plenty of people play the whole endgame in 2D and review the game in 3D.

The view you pick is saved in this browser, so next time the game opens the way you left it.

Fifty piece sets and forty-nine finishes

Every piece set is a different model β€” from the classic turned Staunton to carved, minimal, low-poly and themed versions such as medieval kingdom, viking saga, pharaoh's court and pirate cove.

On top of any set you apply one of 49 finishes: 14 metals (polished and brushed steel, chrome, cast iron, copper, bronze, brass, gold, rose gold, silver, platinum, titanium, pewter), 10 glasses and crystals (frosted, smoked, emerald, sapphire, ruby, amber, obsidian, jade), 10 woods (pine, oak, walnut, mahogany, ebony), 10 stones and 4 synthetics.

The board carries 6 finishes of its own β€” Tournament Green, Walnut Arena, Blue Slate, Marble Hall, Midnight and Royal Ebony β€” and pairs with any piece set.

Against the computer, at the pace you choose

The engine has four strengths: Easy, Medium, Hard and Master. You also choose whether you play White, Black or a random side.

The clock is optional. Play untimed to study a position calmly, or set 3 minutes with a 2-second increment, 5 minutes or 10 minutes when you want the pressure.

The game stays saved while you browse the site: you can visit the shop, check the leaderboard and come back to the move you left.

Common questions

Is 3D chess free?
It is. Playing the computer in 2D or 3D costs nothing and asks for no signup. An account is only needed to play other people online and appear on the leaderboard.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. The 3D scene runs on recent phones and tablets; orbit the board by dragging one finger and zoom with a pinch. On older devices the 2D view stays fast.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs inside the browser tab, on the WebGL it already ships. There is no app, extension or plugin.
Can I play another person in 3D?
You can. The 3D view applies to any game β€” against the computer, against someone on the same device, or online. Each player picks their own view, so one can be in 3D and the other in 2D in the same game.
